Empathy, Bravery, and Hollywood Hypocrisy

Thoughts on Pageboy: A Memoir

Having just read Pageboy: A Memoir, I want to share my thoughts. Elliot takes a diary-like approach, which I found really engaging. It’s not a traditional biography, but that doesn’t take away from the power of his journey. This book delves into Elliot’s struggle for acceptance and survival, which is especially significant in an era of fear, bigotry, and regressive legislation.

Pageboy also highlights the complexities of identity and challenges us to rethink our assumptions. It shows how hypocritical Hollywood (and society) is in glorifying ‘brave’ actors who play queer or transgender roles while suppressing attempts to come out. For years, Page's sexuality was the subject of intense media scrutiny. It's been a long road for an actor who began at the age of 11.

Page never implies that queer and trans narratives are the same. He’s humble and thankful for having access to gender-affirming care. He disputes the idea that strangers understand his body better than he does. And now he’s living an authentic life with newfound confidence.

The author’s sole message is one of empathy. His final thought: “It is not trans people who are sick, but society that fosters such hatred.”
