Lights, Camera, Panic!

Are movie stars extinct?

Hold on to your over-priced pick ‘n mix, folks, because I’ve got some scandalous news for you: “there are no more movie stars!” Can you believe it?

Yeah, right. This theory is as shaky as a Jenga tower sitting on Shakira’s spin drier. But why are we still hearing this bluff?

Let’s face it, the times they are a-changin’. The web has given us the power to curate our own entertainment, and social media has turned up the volume on the marketing machine. The days of worshiping unapproachable gods of the silver screen are over. Now, it’s all about following the creators, the writers, the makers - the ones who make the magic happen.

Sure, the Golden Age of Hollywood had its fair share of omnipotent stars, but that’s so last century. Today’s players still rake in the dough, but they’re not the untouchable divas and heartthrobs of old. Instead, they’re just like us.

Or at least they want us to think so. Luvvies might put on a good show for the gala, but it’s tough to channel Lauren Bacall if you’re papped at Dunkin’ Donuts while wearing your sweats. So, icons still exist. They’re just a bit more caszh.

No, don’t feel bad for them. New new Hollywood wants to let their hair down and get right up in OUR faces. Because they’re self-aware, diverse, relatable, and, erm...multi-millionaires. Fresh talent is consistently emerging, but their appeal won’t span every age gap because markets no longer work that way. Pre-web, it was easy for the media machines to push Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Now we can make up our own minds, thanks.

So, rest easy, movie moochers. Hollywoodland still has plenty of Stars that are shining bright. They just twinkle differently.

Now let's put this topic to bed and look at the rest of the devilry from the last two weeks. >>>
